Aluminium specification guide

Why choose thermal break aluminium?

In Riyadh, a frame is part of the building envelope. A thermal break helps the aluminium profile work with the glass and seals instead of becoming the easiest path for heat to cross.

The simple reason: aluminium conducts heat quickly

Aluminium is strong, durable and precise to fabricate, but it is also conductive. In a conventional frame, the inside and outside aluminium are connected continuously. On a hot day, that connection can carry heat toward the conditioned side of the building.

A thermal-break profile separates those sections with a low-conductivity insulating strip. It does not make a window “cool” by itself; it reduces one important heat-transfer route in the frame.

What changes in the finished opening

  • Better comfort near glass: the interior frame surface is less affected by exterior temperature than a non-thermal profile.
  • Lower condensation risk in the right conditions: warmer interior frame surfaces can reduce the chance of surface condensation where indoor humidity and temperature differences make it relevant.
  • A stronger envelope strategy: thermal-break framing can complement insulated, Low-E or solar-control glass; it should not replace a suitable glass specification.
  • More considered performance for façades: it is particularly relevant where large glazed areas, curtain walls, sliding doors or exposed elevations are part of the design.

Why it matters in Riyadh

Riyadh projects often combine high solar exposure with heavily air-conditioned interiors. That makes the selection of frame, glass, shading, seals and installation details a connected decision. A thermal break gives the frame a better starting point, while the rest of the system controls solar gain, air leakage, water management and day-to-day operation.

The most useful question is not “Do I need thermal break?” in isolation. It is: “What complete window, door or façade build-up suits this elevation, use and comfort target?”

Four checks before you specify a system

  1. Confirm the opening and exposure. Size, orientation, height, wind exposure and shading all influence the appropriate system.
  2. Choose the glass with the frame. Insulated, Low-E or solar-control glazing must be assessed as part of the same assembly.
  3. Review drainage and perimeter interfaces. A good profile cannot compensate for poor flashing, sealing or installation tolerances.
  4. Ask for project-specific performance data. Compare the selected complete system against the project brief, not a generic profile claim.

FAQ

Thermal break aluminium FAQs

Is the correct term thermal break or thermal brake aluminium?

The architectural term is thermal break: an insulating separation in the frame. Thermal brake is a common spelling mistake when searching for insulated aluminium windows and doors.

What is a thermal break in an aluminium window or door?

It is an insulating barrier placed between the interior and exterior aluminium sections of the frame. It reduces the direct path through which heat can move across the profile.

Does a thermal-break profile work on its own?

No. The finished performance depends on the complete system: profile design, glass build-up, seals, installation details, opening type and the surrounding wall connection.

Is thermal-break aluminium suitable for Riyadh?

It is commonly considered for Riyadh projects because exterior heat and air-conditioned interiors create a large temperature difference. The right specification should still be chosen for the facade orientation and project requirements.

What should be included in a thermal-break quotation?

Provide the opening sizes, drawings, glass preference, elevation orientation, finish, opening style and site location. This lets the system, glass and installation scope be reviewed together.
